U. S. Navy Admiral and author. Daniel Vincent Gallery ( ) entered U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis at the age of and graduated a year early in 20. That same year, he competed in the Olympic Games in Antwerp as a member of the U. S. wrestling team. Gallery became an early naval aviator and a pioneer in the piloting of jets. During World War II he commanded an antisubmarine warfare group operating from the USS Guadalcanal aircraft carrier. His most notable achievement was the capture of the German submarine, U-5, in , for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. The U-5 was the only submarine ever captured and boarded at sea, as well as the only warship the U.S. Navy had seized since . Following the war, and after promotion to Rear Admiral, Gallery became Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations and, later, commanded Carrier Division Six during the Korean War. His final command was the Tenth Naval District in Puerto Rico, where he established the first Little Leagues in Puerto Rico, as well as the first all-American and only military steel band which became the U.S. Navy Steel Band.
