American internationally bestselling action/ adventure novelist and underwater explorer. Before , when Cussler began writing novels, he wrote copy and produced radio and TV commercials for which he won numerous international honors, including one at the Cannes Film Festival. His first novel, The Mediterranean Capers, was published in . The Sea Hunters, his first non-fiction work was released in . This book was based on Cussler's underwater explorations which have lead him to the discovery of more than shipwreck sites. The Maritime College of University of New York accepted the book in lieu of a thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree the following year. He is also the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency which preserves American maritime and naval history.
