'French naval officer, oceanographer, explorer, ecologist, writer, filmmaker, and photographer. Cousteau ( � ) pioneered the fields of oceanography and marine conservation. He founded the French navy's undersea research group in , and in was made director of the oceanographic museum of Monaco. Beginning in , he went on annual oceanographic expeditions which were recorded in more than 0 natural history films and television documentaries. He also wrote or co-wrote numerous books. He co-developed the aqua-lung, and also helped develop the bathyscaphe. His first feature-length documentary film, Silent World was released in and earned him the 'Palme D'Or' at the Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar, as did his second film World Without Sun. In , he began filming The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, a popular series for television world wide. It ended in , but he began a new series in , Discovering the World. He is one of only a few foreigners to be admitted to the American Academy of Sciences. '
