George Burns
American vaudeville, film, radio and television comedian, actor and producer. Born Nathan Birnbaum, Burns ( � ) floundered in vaudeville for years until he met his equally legendary wife, Gracie Allen, in about 22. They launched a successful partnership which resulted in their own radio show during s. They reached the zenith of their career in the s with The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show which lasted for eight years on CBS television. Burns' solo career after Allen's retirement in and death in did not flourish until when it was relaunched with his role as Jack Benny in the film version of the Neil Simon comedy The Sunshine Boys for which he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This led to other movie roles (such as the highly successful three Oh, God! movies), television specials, and great success as a nightclub entertainer. Burns wrote many books beginning with a memoir, I Love Her, That's Why!, co-authored with Cynthia Hobart Lindsay, and including a biography of his wife, A Love Story.
