Anne W. Brigman
American avant-garde photographer and poet. Anne W. Brigman (1869 - 1950) was the only Western
photographer and only woman to be admitted by Alfred Stieglitz into his Photo-Secession group,
a hand-picked, internationally renowned society of avant-garde photographers. She became California's
foremost Pictorialist, photographers inspired by Alfred Stieglitz and painters of the Tonalist school
who sought to bring photography into the realm of fine arts by using their cameras as an artistic medium.
In 1949, she published a book of her poems and photographs titled Songs of a Pagan.
