William Bridgeman
American test pilot and author. William Barton Bridgeman (1916 - 1968) flew B-24 bombers
for the U.S. Navy during World War II with the legendary "Buzz" Miller Squadron. He stayed
in the Pacific after the war and flew for several airlines before becaming a test pilot for
Douglas Aircraft in 1949. Bridgeman set many airplane speed and altitude records as a test pilot,
including being the first pilot to fly at Mach 2 in the Douglas Skyrocket. With his wife,
he wrote an autobiography The Lonely Sky.
