Plurabelle Books started about 12 years ago, when an illustrious academic carreer, (Dr phil habil) came to an end with a single term professorial appointment in Siegen (Germany). In Cambridge the local car boot sales seemed to supply books at a good rate, and the charity shops held a few surprises too. Then Professor Leonard Forster, moving house, declined my suggestion of a research project on his collection of 17th century books, but offered me the remainder of his library. Plurabelle was born, and academic aspirations were laid to rest with little regret.
The name will remind some of Finnegans Wake by James Joyce, where Anna Livia Plurabelle has a firm place. The name goes back to the time when we tried to become a supplier of used books for the English Studies community all over Europe. Today we have become almost omnivorous, and no subject, and only a few languages, will send us back. Like the ancient sophists, we have knowledge about everything in stock. And sometimes we even work like a book disposal specialist, and we have helped quite a few librarians to clear the space under the desk or the entire basement.
Today we occupy an old stonemason's workshop close to the station, right next to the railway line. Map Here. Visitors are very welcome, be it to save on postage, to get to know us, or to spend time in our very own real bookshop, distinct from the internet stock offered on the web. Wooden Shelves has many exquisite bargains at very reasonable prices, and some rare items we just find too cumbersome to describe. Best time to call is between 9am and 4pm. Bicycle parking available, but if you bring your car, please ask for us for a permit before it is clamped. We also have a few shelves of books for children, and the whole family will enjoy the lovely gardens with fish and rabbits and an occasional heron or fox. And don't forget to join us on Facebook.
